Just a quick very basic guide here giving what is generally meant by the terms 'Domain Leasing', 'Domain Renting', and 'Joint Venture'.

So what exactly is ‘domain leasing’?

Domain leasing is where the registered owner of a domain lets someone else develop it for a set period (normally multiple years) in consideration of payment of rent from the developer to the domain owner. The leasing agreement could also stipulate a share of the revenue from the website.

So what exactly is ‘domain renting’?

Domain renting is basically the same as domain leasing but the period is normally for a much shorter period (normally less than a year, and could in principle be for only a few days). It may be that an already developed site just wants to advertise on a domain for a short period or it could be also so that the traffic to that domain name can be acquired for some purpose.

So what exactly is a ‘joint venture’?

The basic ‘joint venture’ (JV) can cover several kinds of arrangements but generally consists of an agreement between a website developer and a registered domain holder whereby the developer will develop the site in an agreed way with the domain owner, with revenue from the site being shared also in a predetermined way. Usually no rent is payable from the developer (although minimum payments to the owner from the developer may be stipulated in the contract).

NB. Please note these are just very basic off-the-cuff definitions of the above terms. I would welcome any comments or suggestions for revising the 'definitions'.
