How did you handle the "I don't want to build a website and then lose it and someone else benefit from it."

I've offered leases with almost every purchase from us over the years and had that response over and over.

Ideas? Anyone?

I haven't leased out a domain but the way I would consider handling the lease would be the following:

1) Have an independent (TRUSTED) 3rd party broker to hold the name.

2) Prior to signing the lease renew it for the term of the proposed lease (although some ccTLD extensions can only be renewed a year at a time it is 'generally possible to renew for multiple years with both gTLD's and ccTLD's).

I think that in reality that is all that can be done, but it is also paramount to have a good name, for just like with bricks and mortar properties reputation of the landlord is important if you are after good tenants.

Obviously this is such an important subject that I hope many other members chip in here with experiences and opinions.

I don't have any actual experience yet. How about the case where the lessee can benefit from the type-in traffic right away? For example, suppose I have a sport-related domain with type-in traffic. Can I lease it to a sportswear company which can simply redirect the traffic to their online shop? There's no development cost involved (just a line to code the redirect) in this case.
