Came across this interesting article last week on a piece of research about the number of web page views on smartphones and tablets, tablets have for the first time surpassed smartphones.

http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/07/tablets-vs-smartphones-page-views/

Of course the thing about tablets is that they 'generally have a larger screen size than smartphones, though smartphones screens seem to be getting larger whilst smaller tablets are becoming available.

The research was based on markets in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, U.K, and U.S.

The market share overall was:

Smartphones.............. 7%

Tablets..................... 8%

Desktops/Laptops........84%

This research could have a huge impact on future website development plans as website developers start to upgrade tablet mobile pages as being more important than smartphone website pages.

I think usage of websites from mobile phones will rise drastically when voice-based search becomes decent. Currently, keyboard input on mobile phones is still a big barrier to search.

Unfortunately it is not just the keyboard, IMO it is the size of the screen which explains why the screen size is getting bigger, hence the blurring between cell phones and tablets. I do though agree that the use of handheld devices will drastically increase for web surfing as new technologies evolve.

(Seems strange describing things as 'new technologies' as the respective old technologies are in some instances only a few years old themselves! :) )

I have a feeling that the 7" form factor will become the standard, now that phones and tablets are converging.
